Doraemon - Robot cat
The other day, from the local evening TV news, I learned that our Doraemon is to make his debut on US television this year (2014)!
Doraemon is one of the most popular cartoon characters. He is a robot cat from the future with a magic pocket in his tummy. When I was a child, I used to sit in front of TV and watch Doraemon from 7pm or something together with my brothers without fail. Doraemon also appeared in movies every summer and we used to beg our grandpa to take us to theaters during our summer vacation. With so much good memories, I feel nostalgic when I heard about Doraemon making his debut in the US. Here is the classical Doraemon happy entry song which I believe most of Japanese people can recognize.
Doraemon's mission is to protect, educate and entertain his little friend, Nobita. Doraemon can take out various gudgets from his pocket to help Nobita to deal with his struggles in everyday life. Each Doraemon story covers some moral lessons and as a child, I learn a lot about perseverance, team-work, family, dedication and diligence.
There are a lot of popular Doraemon tools such as "Doko-demo-Doa" (Door to Anywhere) and "Takekoputer" (flying contraption). My favorite Doraemon tool is the "Honyaku Konyaku", or Translation Jelly. When people eat this Honyaku Konnyaku they can understand whatever anyone is saying no matter what language they are speaking. You can be a bilingual, or trilingual immediately. Maybe the fact I remember and pick up this tool as my favorite is reflecting my dream as a little girl to communicate with people in other languages than Japanese freely!
