A good weekend escape close to Tokyo.

Living in the concrete jungle of Tokyo can be overwhelming after a while. (Like the frog being boiled in a pot.)

I was looking for a place to get back to nature within a short Shinkansen ride from Tokyo. A friend turned me on to a place called Minakami in Gunma prefecture. There the Tone River gathers speed and depth coming out of the mountains. This leaves good conditions for whitewater rafting. The folks at Top Minakami (www.topminakami.com) were great outfitters. There Japanese and Nepalese guides were great fun and professional. Great for 'older kids' too. Call ahead if your bringing kids. English spoken. Many great onsen in the area.
