4 reasons to visit Japan in the summer

Japan is a true year-round destination, but if you like the heat and lively festivals, then summer is the perfect time for you to visit.

Summer in Japan typically lasts from June to August, and temperatures are wildly hot and humid (easily soaring above 30 degrees celsius). That being said, summer is one of the most exciting times in Japan–here’s why.

  1. Matsuri

Japan is one of the world’s best festival destinations, with an immense variety of vibrant festivals throughout the year. But matsuri (festivals) are perhaps most strongly associated with summertime, and some of my (as well as the nation’s) favorites include Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka, Nebuta Matsuri in Aomori, and Awa Odori festival in Tokushima.

  1. Hanabi taikai (firework festivals)

Japanese people LOVE fireworks, so it’s no wonder the firework festivals are world-class. The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival in Tokyo is particularly famous, but you will find no shortage of firework displays all over Japan throughout the summer months.

  1. Rafting and hiking

One of my favorite places to enjoy both of these activities is in the pristine Iya Valley, located on the island of Shikoku (southern Japan). During your visit, I highly recommend staying at a ryokan with onsen (hot springs) and visiting the famous Iya Vine Bridge–walk across if you’re brave enough!

  1. Kayaking

There are many places in Japan where you can enjoy sea kayaking like Miyajima Island, where you can get an up close look at the world-famous Itsukushima Shrine. You may also want to consider kayaking in the beautiful azure waters of Okinawa in the south, or even the blue caves near Otaru in Hokkaido up north.

There are so many fun things to do during a Japanese summer that are enjoyable for the whole family. I hope this gives you some great ideas.
