Souvenir ideas to add a touch of Japan to your home

As a college student studying abroad, whenever I return to Japan, I’m eager to find decorations and trinkets to add a touch of home to my dorm room. Here are some of my favorite items that can help you feel connected to Japan wherever you are.

  1. Stationery

Japanese stationery is second to none! It may seem small but using a high-quality pen or beautifully designed notebook from LOFT, Tokyu Hands or a local boutique shop can be a great way to integrate Japanese charm into your daily routine. I particularly love placing a Japanese calendar adorned with incredible photography beside my study space because it keeps me connected to the country’s seasons and various national holidays.

  1. Tenugui

Though technically a towel, tenugui are commonly used as interior decor because they’re often decorated with traditional Japanese patterns and elegant scenic prints. I recommend hanging it on your wall.

  1. Local keepsakes

I love picking up items that remind me of specific places I’ve visited in Japan. For example, during my trip down south to Kyushu, I bought a handmade wooden block with a beautiful quote about the importance of approaching life with a smile. In a similar way, during your adventures in Japan, I highly recommend keeping your eyes peeled for any item that speaks to you, and will remind you of the memories you made.
