A slice of California in the heart of Tokyo

The craft beer movement has steadily gained momentum in Japan, with new establishments and brands popping up all the time. Opened in 2013, Two Dogs Taproom offers 24 beers on tap plus bottled offerings from around the world at their multi-level brewery and restaurant just a block off the main drag in Roppongi.

I’ve been to this spot twice now and the Japanese beers I’ve tried have included Brimmer Brewing’s Golden Ale and California Common as well as the White Ale from Hitachino Nest Beer. Draft beers are available in small (200 ml), medium (360 ml) and large (473 ml) and range in price generally from around 700 yen to 1,400 yen. They also offer a tasting platter, which includes four types of small-sized beers.

When it comes to pizza, this is the place to go for some seriously big eats. Available in two sizes (28 cm or 40 cm), these pies are the largest I’ve seen in Tokyo, which says a lot as I’ve eaten more than my fair share since moving here. Two Dogs Taproom boasts a specially built wood-fired oven, so their thin-crust Californian-style pizzas come out with perfectly melted cheese along with a crisp, slightly charred, but still chewy deliciousness. I loved the pie with pork sausage, pancetta, salami and chili flakes. Their menu also includes more traditional pub fare, such as fish and chips with creamy tartar sauce and chicken wings along with a range of salads and appetizers (vegan and vegetarian options also available).
