For my mother’s birthday last night, my sister and I decided to treat her to a special dinner at one of Japan’s oldest Italian restaurants, Antonio’s. We couldn’t have left more satisfied–it was truly a five-star experience.
Established in 1944, this quaint restaurant located in the posh Minami-Aoyama neighborhood has continued the legacy of the original owner over three generations.
After much pondering, we ordered a classic fresh tomato and mozzarella salad, three pasta dishes (basil, carbonara, and specialty cream sauce), a mushroom risotto and veal parmigiana. Simply put, this meal was perhaps the best Italian food I’ve had in Japan, my favorite being the delicately tender and deeply flavorful veal. The pistachio ice cream that accompanied my mother’s special birthday dessert plate was also fantastic.
Besides the food and charming decor, the service really made this night one to remember. Even though we ordered a la carte, our friendly yet professional waiter ensured that the portions were just the right amount for sharing. He also maintained the perfect amount of attentiveness for when we needed it, while allowing some gentle distance and privacy so we could really enjoy our special family time.
