There’s no denying that Japanese summers are full of celebration.
Throughout the season, you’ll encounter numerous festivals featuring dazzling fireworks, mouth watering street food, and, of course, vibrant dancing. One of the highlights is bon odori, which takes place in July or August during the Obon season–an annual Buddhist event that honors the spirits of ancestors.
Each region may have its own unique style, but the essence remains the same: people gather to honor, celebrate, and send off the spirits of their ancestors typically by dancing in a circle around a stage. The lively rhythm of taiko drums, bamboo flutes, and vocals fills the air, creating an atmosphere of wholesome joy.
Everyone is welcome to join the fun! I highly recommend checking out your local festival information and experiencing the joy of bon odori for yourself.
