Don Quijote: Japan’s ultimate discount store–but why the name?

Don Quijote (Donki) is one of the most beloved discount stores in Japan, with locations all over the country. From bicycles and electronics to Halloween costumes, suitcases and even food, Donki has it all.

If it’s your first time hearing about this store though, you might be wondering the story behind its name. Indeed, it is directly inspired by the 17th-century Spanish literary character and protagonist of Miguel de Cervantes’ novel of the same title. According to the Donki website, the founding members wanted “to create a new distribution format, like Don Quijote, who is an action-oriented idealist and does not bow to conventional wisdom or authority.”

I think the company achieved their goal because anyone who has shopped at Donki knows that it is a one-of-a-kind experience.
