Buddhist temples exist all across Japan, each with a unique story and character. Many people visit temples to adore the intricate architecture, roam the serene grounds and feel its oftentimes centuries-old history, say a prayer, and more. But how about staying overnight? Experiencing a Zen meditation or sutra writing session with a Buddhist monk?
Less known to many visitors, numerous temples across Japan offer these opportunities, and the beautiful Shinsho-ji Temple in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, is one of them. I experienced a few hours of Zazen (seated) meditation along with traditional vegan shojin ryori (Buddhist cuisine) after which I felt like I had greater insight into the power and culture of Bushido–the moral code concerning samurai warriors that was inspired by Buddhist values.
