- What is a Senpai?
-
At Deep Japan, we refer to every writer as a Senpai. They are your mentors and companions as you discover the sides of Japan you won’t often find in guidebooks.
- Who can become a Senpai?
-
The only requirement is that you must have lived in Japan for at least three years at some point (you do not have to be a current resident). This ensures our writers bring a deep understanding of the topics they cover, going beyond stereotypes and surface impressions. No professional writing experience is required.
- Is there a screening process to become a Senpai?
-
Yes. All applicants must submit their profiles through our website. If approved, you will receive a response within 14 days. If you do not hear from us within this time frame, please assume that your application was not accepted.
- Are articles vetted?
-
Yes. All articles must be approved by the Editor-in-Chief before being published on Deep Japan. Even if you are an approved Senpai, publication of your article is not guaranteed. To maximize your chances, please follow the writing guidelines defined in the next section.
- What are the writing guidelines?
-
Length: We kindly request that articles be at least 600 words, though shorter submissions will not be automatically dismissed.
Content: You can choose any Japan-related topic that resonates with you, but explore beyond mainstream angles easily found on other websites. Topics like climbing Mt. Fuji or visiting Hokkaido for the first time are welcome, as long as the story unpacks something deeper and incorporates your personal voice.
Here are some title ideas for the topics previously mentioned:
- “The other side of Mt. Fuji: Tales from the lesser-known trails”
- “How Hokkaido changed my perspective on snow forever”
Overall, maintain a positive tone throughout and balance two key aspects.
1) Informative: How does your story enrich the reader’s experience in, understanding of, or connection to Japan?
2) Personal: Why is this story special to you?
Example #1: You are writing about your favorite Japanese film
- Informative: Cover the basics (release year, director, brief synopsis, etc.) for readers unfamiliar with the film. Then, explain how watching this film can enrich the reader’s understanding of Japan. What does the film say about Japanese culture?
- Personal: Why is this film your favorite? Which scene or character resonates with you the most?
Example #2: You are writing about your recent trip to Yokohama
- Informative: Provide context (geographical location, history, fun facts, etc.) for readers who may not know about the city. Explain what makes Yokohama unique compared to nearby cities like Tokyo or Kamakura from your point of view.
- Personal: Share your standout moments. Did you have any memorable interactions with locals?
The purpose of Deep Japan is to connect readers with Senpais who share a genuine love for Japan and have first-hand experience with their stories. Whether a reader knows nothing about Japan or has lived here for years, the platform aims to provide fresh, thoughtful, authentic, and fascinating insights into Japan. Each Senpai’s unique perspective is key, and we encourage writers to let their one-of-a-kind voice shine by using the first person whenever possible.
- Could my article be heavily edited after the Editor-in-Chief’s review?
-
It is possible. If the content is strong but the writing style needs adjustments, the Editor-in-Chief may make changes directly. Alternatively, they might provide feedback and request that you revise the article yourself.
- Are Senpais compensated for publishing articles?
-
Articles are generally published on a volunteer basis so there is no compensation. However, for “Sponsored Content” (articles created through business partnerships), select Senpais may be commissioned to write for a client based on their experiences and/or expertise, with compensation included.
- Who can read my stories?
-
Once published, your articles will be accessible to readers worldwide!
