From crockery to coffee, Kappabashi has it all

Only a 15-minute walk down Asakusa Dori lies Kappabashi, a street jam packed with restaurant goods.

These range from beautiful crockery to individual taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) forms, and of course, the amazingly realistic plastic food samples you see in restaurant windows. There are also a few antique stores hidden here and there, which makes for a very fun stroll.

Besides being a fascinating little area, it is also an ideal place to shop for inexpensive but high quality souvenirs, such as porcelain, cute chopstick holders and rice crackers.

The buildings are pretty eye-catching too–bright, showy, and infused with a retro feel. They attract lots of admiration, especially the dynamic 11-meter-high head of a mustached chef, and the apartment right across from it with adorable teacup-shaped balconies. You will have to see it to believe it!

Since it is right between Ueno and Asakusa, you can then make a detour to Ueno Park and Ameya Yokocho (candy store alley) or head over to the temples and kimono stores in Asakusa.
