Fukubukuro: Japan’s New Year “lucky bag” tradition

During the first few days of January, people in Japan flock to malls, outlets, and department stores to get their hands on fukubukuro. They are essentially “lucky bags” filled with an assortment of goods, and the best part is…you don’t know what you’re going to get!

Well, of course, you can get a general idea based on the store you’re buying it from, but the specific products remain hidden. Beyond the fun mystery though, one of the biggest draws of a fukubukuro is that its contents are often worth much more than the bag’s price.
