Golden Week centers around four national holidays in Japan and runs for about a week from late April to early May every year. It’s one of the country’s three busiest holiday seasons alongside New Years and Obon (mid-August).
During Golden Week, people generally travel overseas or domestically for sightseeing purposes, or return to their hometowns in Japan to spend time with family. Be warned though that popular sightseeing spots get particularly congested during this period so it’s always best to plan way in advance (even 6 months prior) if you want to get the best accommodation.
With that said, where should you go?
Well, it really depends on your interests but if you’re in Tokyo and wish to experience some trendy shopping, COREDO Muromachi is a great spot. Not only is this complex filled with a wide range of stylish shops, cafes, and restaurants to keep you busy, it’s located near the historic Nihonbashi Bridge that has marked the starting point for Japan’s national highway network since the Edo Period (1603 – 1868).
That’s a really big deal!
