Cherry blossom season is a big deal in Japan–so much so, there is a centuries-old tradition called hanami (“flower-watching”), which is entirely dedicated to admiring the blossoms through picnics or strolls.
You will also notice a complete takeover of cherry blossom-flavored or themed products in cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, etc.
If you’re wondering whether the hype is justified, I would certainly say yes! Despite growing up with cherry blossoms around me every year, the magical shimmer of the pale pink petals especially in the sunlight still takes my breath away. Plus, there is something to be said about the gorgeous and impressive variety of cherry blossoms, which is estimated to be over 600 types across Japan.
