Irohazaka Slope in Nikko is one of Japan’s most scenic drives, especially during autumn when the leaves are ablaze with color. The pair of winding roads, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes to ascend (nearly 3 to 4 hours on weekends during the autumn traffic), offers stunning views at every turn.
At the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the valley glowing in cozy hues of red, brown and yellow from late October to early November. Feel the rich history of Nikko too, home to Toshogu–Japan’s most lavishly decorated shrine that reflects the area’s importance as the center of Shinto and Buddhist mountain worship for centuries.
