Kawasaki Daishi Wind Chime Market in July

Each year, for five days in July, the temple grounds of Kawasaki Daishi (Kanagawa Prefecture) are taken over by a wind chime market.

The creators of these lovely crafts come from all across Japan, representing almost every prefecture, to display and sell their chimes. The varieties are endless, from classic glass globes and iron bells, to unusual charcoal, bamboo and pottery chimes. The colors and shapes are a feast for the eyes, and make wonderfully unique, portable souvenirs.

In Japan, the sound of wind chimes is believed to be ‘cooling’, their delicate sound accompanied by a welcome breeze.

Besides the wind chime market, the temple itself (and nearby food stalls!) are also worth a look. Entering the street towards the temple (a 10-minute walk from Kawasaki Daishi station), you will be greeted with the cheerful sound of artisans cutting up traditional candy, and booths selling delicious treats and bright red daruma (wishing dolls).
