Like so many others in Japan, I love rice. It’s the staple of the Japanese diet that has been enjoyed for hundreds of years–with good reason! Perfectly fluffy with a subtle sweetness that complements the incredible flavors of Japanese cuisine.
I’m always on the lookout for new ways to enhance my daily rice-eating experience, and one of my recent discoveries is furikake. It’s a dry and flaky condiment that is meant to be sprinkled on rice. While it comes in many flavors, seaweed, sesame seeds and dried fish is the typical combination. I personally love the okaka (dried bonito flakes) and noritama (seaweed and bits of dried egg) flavors.
Next time you visit a Japanese supermarket, keep your eyes peeled for furikake in the condiments section. Delicious and lightweight, it’s also the perfect souvenir to bring back home to friends and family!
