Renting a car can be a convenient and even economical option if you’re traveling in a group. It definitely makes sense if you are planning to explore the Japanese countryside where public transportation is infrequent or limited. However, if you’re just planning to stay in a big city like Tokyo or Osaka, renting a car should be avoided because of the ever-present congestion and high parking fees. When staying in urban areas, trains and buses are best.
If you do want to explore rural areas and need to rent a car, there are numerous rental car stores located throughout Japan, especially around train stations. To avoid any waiting time upon arrival or the unfortunate situation of finding no vehicles available, I recommend making a reservation in advance, either online or by phone.
Make sure you either have a valid Japanese driver’s license or International Driving Permit (issued from your home country).
