A minshuku is a traditional Japanese bed and breakfast, often found throughout Japan, especially in popular tourist spots. Unlike larger ryokan (traditional Japanese inns with hot springs and other extensive facilities), minshuku are typically small and family-run. They’re one of the best accommodation options for budget travelers.
When I looked into minshuku options in the Izu Peninsula area for a summer trip, prices affordably started at around 4,000 yen per person a night (even though August is usually the busiest season).
A pro tip is to choose the sudomari option, which means meals are not included. But no worries, foodies! All you have to do is explore the surrounding area, and you’ll surely find those local delicacies.
Since minshuku are often regular homes where the hosts live in the same building, staying there gives you a unique glimpse into local Japanese life. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to experience authentic, deep Japan, consider staying at a minshuku.
