Takarazuka: Japan’s all-female musical phenomenon

Takarazuka is a one-of-a-kind musical theater troupe that originated in a small town of the same name in Hyogo Prefecture. What sets this group apart is that all characters–even male roles–are played by women. Since their debut in 1914, Takarazuka has become a cultural phenomenon, each performance typically guided by an irresistible blend of romance and drama.

Many young girls, including myself and my sister, once dreamed of becoming a Takarazuka star! However, the competition among aspiring talents is so fierce, requiring two years of training in various artforms like ballet, singing and traditional Japanese dance, at the Takarazuka Music School.

Although the grand theater in Takarazuka City is where it all began, you can also catch performances at the second venue in Tokyo, just a short walk from Yurakucho Station.
