The perfect recipe for a quintessential Japanese winter: Kotatsu, mikan and more

For a cozy winter experience, I recommend staying at a ryokan equipped with a kotatsu–a low heated table covered with a futon blanket to keep your feet (and body) warm. Families often gather around the kotatsu, enjoying mikan (Japanese mandarin) and senbei (rice crackers) while watching TV.

To experience the New Year’s countdown like a local, spend the night eating mikan and senbei at the kotatsu table while watching “Kohaku Uta Gassen”. It’s a beloved nationwide music show that features everything from traditional Japanese folk songs to modern hits on New Year’s Eve.
