Tips for staying at a family-run minshuku

Staying at a traditional Japanese bed and breakfast, or minshuku, offers a unique and cozy experience, but there are a few things you might want to know beforehand. First off, minshuku are typically family-run, smaller, and more personal than regular hotels, so don’t expect grand amenities and facilities like a pool or gym. Bathrooms and showers are often shared, so it’s very important to be considerate of other guests.

Since minshuku are often just regular homes where the hosts also live, sound insulation can be minimal, so keeping any noise down to a minimum (especially early mornings and late evenings) would be best.

With that said though, minshuku offers an incredible opportunity to have an intimate glimpse into daily life in Japan. I am sure your hosts will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the region, and give you local tips on how best to enjoy your stay.
