Why people wear full suits in Japan

Pretty much every businessperson in Japan wears a full suit to work every day. Well, during the summers, businesspeople can wear more breathable, lightweight materials and the “cool biz” dress code allows for no neckties, but if you’re meeting a customer or client, you’re expected to be in full formal attire.

This actually reveals a very interesting part about Japanese culture, which is that people allocate immense value on presentation and attitude in addition to the quality of work. Based on my personal experience, I’ve found this contrasts quite starkly to the way it’s done among Western companies where there’s not as much of a priority placed on aspects other than actual results.

In Japan, wearing a full suit is one way to show a dedicated attitude towards work. So, if you ever start working in a Japanese company or come across the opportunity to attend a business event, it’s always wise to suit up. Don’t forget to wear your best attitude too!
