Beach resorts aren’t usually the first thing visitors associate with Japan, but this country has numerous excellent options. Located on the west coast of Japan’s tropical paradise, Okinawa, is one such resort called The Moon Beach.
As the first full-scale resort on Okinawa inaugurated in 1975, The Moon Beach encompasses an impressive variety of facilities including several restaurants, a seaside gallery, two swimming pools, miniature golf course, two tennis courts, and a gym. Staying there just for a couple of days, we didn’t have nearly enough time to take advantage of all the amenities offered–it almost felt like a small town all on its own.
The guest rooms strike the perfect balance of luxurious and cozy, combining stylish designs with natural materials. Opting for an ocean-facing room means waking up to the splendor of the resort’s private, crescent-shaped beach, which is truly a sight to behold. Our room was large, sleeping three people comfortably with ample closet space and extra bedding.
As for food, you can find a couple of options, ranging from casual fare and local favorites like cheeseburgers or taco rice to upscale Japanese cuisine. We enjoyed the delicious variety at the Corallo dinner buffet, which included a particularly impressive spread of desserts. If you want to explore outside the resort grounds, there are plenty of options nearby including bars offering a variety of rainbow-colored tropical drinks as well as traditional Okinawan cuisine.
The staff at The Moon Beach were very accommodating, arranging transportation and providing local insight. While the hotel offers a variety of water sports and activities, they weren’t pushy about them and let you just enjoy lounging on the beach. The hotel was very well staffed, so it was never hard to find someone if you needed them and everyone spoke English.
We’re hoping to return to Okinawa soon and will keep The Moon Beach at the top of our list.
