Takeshita Dori: Where “weird” doesn’t exist

I recently visited Takeshita Dori in Harajuku, one of the trendiest shopping areas in Tokyo. Beyond the opportunity to shop for some affordable and funky outfits, walking down this street is a total cultural immersion.

This narrow, roughly 400 meter long street is the center of teenage fashion and cosplay culture in the city, which means simply observing the kinds of people there, is an experience. From young women sporting the iconic “gyaru” aesthetic characterized by dyed hair and heavy make-up, to those dressing up in their favorite anime characters, Takeshita Dori is where self-expression through fashion–no matter how “unconventional”–is celebrated.
