Taneya: Over 150 years of wagashi excellence in Shiga Prefecture

Based in my home prefecture of Shiga (east of Kyoto), Taneya is a beloved confectionery cafe that has been around for over 150 years. They serve all kinds of delicious Japanese wagashi treats including manju (small bun with a sweet filling), daifuku (stuffed mochi rice cake), dorayaki (red bean paste sandwiched between two fluffy, pancake-like patties), and more.

Since their founding in 1872, Taneya has expanded to locations outside of Shiga Prefecture but the quality remains exceptional. Every visit to their shop is also exciting because they always have new, seasonal offerings.

I am not typically one to save packages but I always find myself wanting to keep Taneya’s boxes and even use them as decorations on my shelves! The attention to detail–not only in the impeccable flavors but also presentation–makes it abundantly clear that the team behind Taneya holds such deep care, love and passion for their craft.

During your visit, I highly recommend also stopping by their sister cafe Club Harie (located right next door), which–in my humble opinion–serves some of the finest Baumkuchen (traditional German cake) you can find in Japan.
