Although Tsukiji’s famous tuna auctions relocated to the new site in Toyosu, its outer market is still definitely worth exploring. You would naturally expect the best delicacies to be fish-based, but there are plenty of other hearty and affordable treats you would not want to miss.

A local favorite is definitely the tamagoyaki (slightly sweet and savory cuboidal Japanese omelet). As you’re waiting in line, you can watch the master chefs grilling and flipping the omelets with expert rhythm and technique. My personal non-seafood go-to though, is the menchi katsu at Yoshizawa Shoten. It is a deep-fried Matsusaka premium wagyu beef patty that bursts juicy umami in every bite.

But of course, there’s no way you can leave Tsukiji without trying the seafood! You can’t go wrong with the kaisen-don, which offers an array of fresh seafood topped on warm rice.
