For a Japanese bento on the go, think Hotto Motto

Bento—pre-prepared lunch boxes—are a staple in Japan and have gained worldwide popularity in recent years. If you don’t have time to make your own, countless shops and restaurants offer ready-to-go bento for lunch or dinner. One of the most popular chains is Hotto Motto.

The name “Hotto” has a clever double meaning in Japanese—it refers both to “hot” food and the phrase hotto suru, meaning to feel relieved. And that’s exactly what a good meal should do!

One of my favorites is the Makunouchi bento, a classic lunchbox featuring a variety of small dishes such as fish, meat, pickles, eggs, and vegetables, all served with rice and a tangy umeboshi (pickled plum). The selection varies by store, but Makunouchi bento generally includes more side dishes and is priced slightly higher than simpler options. At Hotto Motto, however, it’s both affordable and delicious.

For the perfect pairing, add a side of tonjiru (pork miso soup)—it’s rich, hearty, and complements any bento beautifully.
