Visit Enoshima Island to experience one of Japan’s top winter illuminations

Located just a short train ride from Kamakura (Kanagawa Prefecture), Enoshima Island is one of the best places you can go for magical winter illuminations. The event, beautifully named Shonan no Hoseki (“Jewel of Shonan”), typically takes place from late November to the end of February every year. It features about 10 different illumination spots across the island, including (but not limited to) Enoshima Shrine, Nakatsumiya Square, and of course, the iconic Sea Candle Lighthouse. In my opinion, the Shonan Chandelier Tunnel is particularly not to be missed, as you will find hundreds of Swarovski crystals twinkling in majestically-colored LED lights all above you.

I highly recommend combining the illumination tour with a visit to Enoshima Island Spa (Enospa) where healing natural hot springs await. Yep! Not a lot of people know this but there is in fact an onsen facility near the entrance of the island on the right side just as you finish crossing the bridge.

If you are blessed with clear skies (which are pretty common during the winter months) and time your visit right, you might even be able to witness the unforgettable view of the sun setting beside Mt. Fuji, all while relaxing in the outdoor pool area. That’s peak luxury!
