Held every year on the first weekend of June in downtown Hiroshima City, Tokasan Festival signals the beginning of summer. Street food, refreshing drinks, game stalls, traditional music and more, this three-day event encompasses everything that’s to love about matsuri (Japanese festivals).
I particularly love this festival because it marks the start of the yukata (summer kimono) season. These casual yet elegant traditional Japanese garments come in all colors and patterns that further enhances the festive spirit.
So, how about trying on one for yourself? There are many shops along the Hondori Shopping Street that sell yukata sets (including the obi belt and geta shoes) for under 10,000 yen. You may have some trouble putting on a yukata for the first time, which is completely natural, so I recommend following some instructions online. Or better, I’m sure the staff at the shop will gladly advise you on the correct steps.
While the light and breathable fabric of yukata make for appropriate warm-weather wear, it’s important not to underestimate the summer humidity in Japan. I recommend following the lead of locals who often use portable electric fans or drape a cold towel around their necks for better comfort.
