Hama-rikyu Gardens: A beautiful and historic oasis in Tokyo

Located conveniently near Shiodome Station, Hama-rikyu is a serene escape amidst Tokyo’s urban landscape. Originally built in the Edo Period (1603 – 1868) to serve as a residence and hunting ground for feudal lords, visitors can now explore its tranquil ponds, diverse botany, picturesque Japanese-style bridges, and charming gazebos for an entrance fee of just 300 yen per adult.

My personal highlight is Nakajima Teahouse located in the middle of the pond, where you can enjoy traditional matcha throughout the year.

To enhance your visit, consider taking a boat from Asakusa along the Sumida River, which conveniently drops you off at the garden’s entrance. Combining this with a tour of the Asakusa and Sky Tree areas makes for a perfect day in Tokyo.
