Beach day in Japan? Here’s an insider tip

Japan scores very high in terms of public facilities. Transportation is convenient and punctual, public bathrooms are abundant and clean, parks are generally litter-free and well-manicured, etc. Surprisingly though, beaches often lack facilities like showers and changing rooms (at least where I’ve been near Kamakura and Enoshima Island). Even when present, they are usually overcrowded especially in summer when it really feels like EVERYONE is at the beach. Congested beaches can really take away from the experience that is meant to be relaxing and refreshing…but no worries, there is a solution!

Umi no ie are beach houses that line up along the shore only during warm-weather swimming season. Although it really depends on the location, you can use the beach house throughout the day for about 1,000 to 1,800 yen per adult. These beach houses offer and sell a wide range of services including delicious food and drinks, bathrooms, showers, beach equipment rentals, etc. The base price can seem expensive, but it’s worth it especially if you plan on staying at the beach the entire day, because you will need the shade and parasol rentals are often sold out.
