If you’re seeking a romantic getaway with your significant other from Tokyo, consider taking a drive to Yokohama. The journey takes under an hour and offers spectacular views, especially at night.
First, I highly recommend exploring the downtown Minatomirai area where you’ll find beautifully-designed shopping complexes including MARK IS and Landmark Tower. Next, on the way to the Motomachi district, stop by Akarenga Soko–a beautiful red brick warehouse, once used as the city’s main shipping hub. Now home to artisanal shops, restaurants and cafes, Akarenga Soko is the perfect place to take a short coffee break. There are also numerous events held here throughout the year, including Oktober Fest, Christmas markets, and more.
Park your car nearby, and take a romantic stroll along the coast through Yamashita Park. You could even get some takeout at the nearby Chinatown for an epic picnic date. On your way back, watch the sunset from Osanbashi Pier for unobstructed views of the entire Minatomirai area. The ferris wheel lights up in moving colors throughout the night and you might even see yakatabune (traditional leisure boats) cruising across the bay in summer.
If time allows, continue your walk to Minato-no-Mieru Oka Kouen (Harbor View Park) near the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea. It’s an off-the-beaten-path gem that offers a quiet atmosphere to enjoy stunning vistas of Yokohama Bay and Bay Bridge.
On your drive home, take the Wangan-sen (Bayshore Route) for a scenic drive across the Bay Bridge.
