Suikawari–literally translating to “watermelon-splitting”–is a traditional summer game in Japan that usually takes place at beaches, festivals, or backyard gatherings.
During the game, a player holding a wooden stick or bat is blindfolded, spun around to disorient them, and then guided by the verbal directions of friends to try and strike a watermelon placed on the ground. If a player misses, the next person takes their turn until the watermelon is successfully split. It’s similar to a Mexican pinata, involving teamwork, a whole lot of laughter, and a refreshing treat for everyone to enjoy at the end.
