Japan’s year-round wonders: Here’s what to expect in every season

When is the best time of year to visit Japan?

Well, one of my favorite things about Japan is that it’s truly worth visiting anytime. Every season has its one-of-a-kind charms, and the culture here is remarkable in its appreciation toward them.

But of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that YOU will enjoy Japan all year round, so it’s wise to take the characteristics of seasons into account when planning your trip.

Here are some of my favorite reasons to visit Japan during each magical season (please note that the following temperatures are approximations and specific to averages in Tokyo–other regions across Japan can have vastly different weather conditions).

  1. Spring

Spring lasts from around March to May. It may be spring but beware that the first half of the season is mostly still pretty cold in Tokyo (as low as 5 degrees celsius during mornings and evenings). Temperatures are typically much more comfortable during the daytime in May, reaching around 23 degrees Celsius.

Highlights: Cherry blossoms, of course!

  1. Rainy Season

“Tsuyu” is the word for the rainy season in Japanese and lasts from about June to late July (it is technically considered a part of summer). You may want to avoid this period if you’re not a fan of rain. Personally, I think it offers a special kind of serenity you can’t experience in other seasons.

Highlights: The atmosphere of calmness and serenity. Traditional architecture like temples and shrines look particularly stunning on rainy days.

  1. Summer

Summer is usually from June to August. The heat and humidity is certainly not to be underestimated. However, it is one of the most exciting times to visit Japan due to the plethora of vibrant matsuri (Japanese festivals) featuring great music and dance!

Highlights: Japanese festivals and firework shows.

  1. Autumn

Autumn lasts from around September to November. In terms of the weather, autumn is widely considered the most pleasant time, with temperatures ranging from approximately 10 to 21 degrees Celsius.

Highlights: Autumn foliage, pleasant temperatures and delicious seasonal food (don’t miss the sweet potatoes and persimmons)!

  1. Winter

Winter generally lasts from December to February. Winters are cold, with temperatures ranging from approximately 4 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Highlights: Skiing, snowboarding, and onsen (Japanese hot springs).

So, all things considered, which season speaks to you most?
