Basic tips you should know before experiencing your first nomihoudai (all you can drink) in Japan!

When hosting a party at an izakaya (Japanese-style pub), one popular option is the nomihoudai (all you can drink) plan. I never realized how unique this concept was until my international friends told me they’d never encountered an all-you-can-drink option before!

With nomihoudai, you can enjoy as much alcohol and soft drinks as you want for as low as 1,000 yen for two hours, though prices vary by location. Some izakaya even offer plans with three-hour limits or all-night options. Typically, more expensive plans provide better drink selections.

Keep in mind the common rule of the “one glass for one drink” policy. You must hand the waiter an empty glass to order a new drink. Additionally, everyone in your group must choose the same all-you-can-drink plan to prevent sharing among different plans.

Lastly, it may be an all you can drink experience, but don’t forget to be mindful of others and responsible with your behavior.
