Ouendan: The fired-up cheer squad of Japan’s sports culture

At pretty much any sports game in Japan, ouendan is the heart and soul of crowd-cheering. The troupe’s well-trained members coordinate chants among fans accompanied by powerful drums, trumpets, a whistle used by the leader and flag-waving.

Having attended Japanese soccer and baseball games, I can attest to the significant role that the ouendan plays in creating a lively and energetic atmosphere (even when the team is losing)!
