Rona Conti

Hello. My name is Rona Conti. Since my college days, I had dreamed of studying calligraphy in Japan, where the art form has been practiced for over 1,500 years following its adoption from China. It took 35 years to realize that dream. At the age of 59, I moved to Takasaki in Gunma Prefecture, determined to pursue it. I found a sensei, and I’ve been studying calligraphy ever since. Today, I exhibit my work and continue my studies overseas by mail. I can honestly say that I love everything about Japan—especially writing sutras in temples.

“I love to be in a mountainous area replete with temples and gardens, from which I draw inspiration for my calligraphy and artwork. I also love the cuisine of Japan and its aesthetic rituals. As Edith Shiffert wrote, ‘With the entire earth drenched in flowers, why not peace and joy?'”
