All about Niijima

Part of the Izu island chain, Niijima is home to some of the most stunning beaches I’ve ever seen — which says a lot because I’ve had the pleasure of traveling to tropical paradises like Hawaii and Greece. Equally as beautiful with the added bonus of little to no crowds, Niijima is a real hidden gem.

I only discovered this tropical paradise thanks to a friend who runs a minshuku (traditional Japanese bed and breakfast) there. I was captivated by the island as soon as I arrived, and I am sure you will be too!

About 2,500 people call Niijima home, and it is a favorite destination of many outdoor enthusiasts too. The island is popular with surfers and divers, and also offers great trekking. Habushiura Beach and other locations are equipped with surf shops where you can rent gear. For those who want to relax, Niijima also offers hot springs and art.

Access

You can reach Niijima by plane from Chofu Airport. The flight is under 1 hour.

The other access option is by sea: A trip on the Express Jetboat from Tokyo Takeshiba Pier takes roughly 3 hours, while the larger overnight ferry takes almost 10.
