Gateway to Yokohama

Although it sounds intuitive to start your Yokohama City exploration at Yokohama Station, Sakuragicho Station is actually located in a more central location, so I suggest you start there. The shopping complex of Colette Mare and Landmark Tower are just nearby, and if you’re lucky, you’ll even see a live music performance in the open square right outside the station’s East Exit.

Besides walking toward Landmark Tower, you could take the YOKOHAMA AIR CABIN cable car or walk across the bridge to Akarenga Soko (Red Brick Warehouse), then stroll through Yamashita Park along the pier in the direction of Chinatown.

From Sakuragicho Station, the possibilities of exploration are endless!

One of Japan’s first stations

In fact, Sakuragicho Station is actually one of Japan’s first railroad stations. Opening in 1872, it served as the original Yokohama Station and connected Yokohama with Shinagawa in Tokyo. It was given its current name in 1915.

Yokohama was one of Japan’s main ports for international trade at the time, so connecting the city with Tokyo was a logical starting point for the country’s new rail network. Japan’s first railroads were built with the help of British engineers, though, as is often the case, Japan quickly made the import its own and continues to be internationally renowned for its speedy, reliable rail transport.
