A river woven into Kyoto life

The adorably named Kamo (“duck”) River is Kyoto’s treasured natural gem. For centuries, this mighty river has sustained the livelihoods of the local community, from providing food and transportation to offering a way to cool down during the harsh summers. Today, you can still see how the river is deeply integrated into local life, with people gathering here with family, friends, partners, and colleagues throughout the year.

Kamo River through the seasons

In spring, thousands come together to enjoy the splendor of fragrant cherry blossoms that shimmer along the river. In summer, you will find little children happily splashing around in the water. In autumn, photographers flock to the banks to capture the perfect shot of the vibrant foliage. In winter, early birds take a brisk and refreshing morning walk to start their day right.

These are just a few of the many beautiful scenes that can be seen along the Kamo River.

A summer evening by the Kamo River

My favorite, however, is to stroll along the pathway beside the river on a summer night, after the heat recedes and a cool breeze blows. Around this time of year, you will also see noryo-yuka, which are matted terraces extended from restaurants so that customers can experience open-air riverside dining. Don’t miss exploring Pontocho Alley, Kyoto’s historic entertainment district, which runs one block west of the Kamo River.
